My oldest daughter was going to Mexico for a semester to study abroad, and needed to know her blood type. The doctor wanted $200 (I was shocked) to do a blood type test, and my daughter did not want to give at the Red Cross to find out because she is afraid of needles. So, we thought we would give this a try.
I bought 4 kits: one each for my wife and I, and one for each of my daughters. My wife and I know our blood types because we give to the Red Cross, and would be the "control subjects". Plus, by doing ours first, it would allow for some practice.
Here are the steps for the test. Everything you need (except the water) is included.
1) Put a drop of water (dropper included) in each of the four circles on the card
2) Clean a finger with an alcohol wipe
3) Prick the finger using a spring-loaded finger prick
4) Squeeze a drop of blood on a stir stick
5) Stir the blood into the water
6) Using a new stir stick, repeat #3 and #4 for each circle
7) Read the results using the included instructions
The finger prick device worked well. The kit comes with two finger pricks, which was good because one of the pricks was already "sprung" in one of the kits (it looks like the protective cap came off during shipping). One tip for drawing blood: Make sure your hands are warm. My youngest daughter's hands were cold, and I really had to massage the finger to get blood to come out.
The kit comes with 4 "stir sticks". I found it a little challenging to get the blood on the end of the stick. Tip: Make sure to stir the blood and water well. For the first two cards, I was being "gentle" with my stirring. It worked better if I made sure the stir stick rubbed on the card as I stirred.
The results? Pretty good. I'm O-, and my card clearly indicated that. My wife is B+. Her Anti-D was clearly coagulated, but her Anti-B was not as clear. As we got more practice with the process and stirred better, my two daughters' results were very clear. My oldest is O- and my youngest is B-. By the way, I checked online to see if those were possible hereditary blood types for my daughters based on my and my wife's blood types...they are.

I am a nurse. I saw one of these blood pressure cuffs being used by another nurse, and asked her about it, then, promptly ordered one for myself. At that time it was 100.00, through a cnursing catalogue. I work in a busy rehab center where I take atleast 8-20 blood pressures daily. What my patients say about this is, "Wow, it didn't tighten my arm at all." "Didn't hurt a bit." "I've never seen one like it."
A doctor and myself measured readings done manually and readings done by this little machine, and found either way to be only a couple of numbers different.
My mom loves it, and we found the same model on Amazon for alot cheaper than 100.00. I have had poor experiences with another wrist blood pressure monitor that was 39.99. This little Omron is quick, easy, and correct.
Some of it's features: If you move your arm while you take the blood pressure, it shows an E for error. The batteries last about three motnhs. On this model, there is no battery indicator. It stores over 10 blood pressure readings. It also measures the pulse. There's no date or time stamp, but I didn't have good luck with the model with that feature.
To me, every house should have one of these cuffs, not the cheaper priced cuffs that donot work. I've used it at home and at work consistently, and I will buy the exact same cuff again. I hope Omron doesn't stop making them.

I got this monitor to keep track of my blood pressure so that I could give the printed reports to my doctor. I have one that I got from Sharper Image that is easy to use but you can't upload readings to a computer. The one from Sharper Image was also not very accurate when compared to using a regular doctor grade cuff with a stethoscope. The Omron monitor is much easier to use than the Sharper Image one, is easier to ensure the proper position and the uploading of the readings is very easy. I took the Omron monitor to my doctor to have her calibrate it against her measurements and the Omron monitor was nearly identical. Based on that and the printed reports, I was taken off my blood pressure medication!

Omron HEM-712CLC Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with Large Cuff Review

This is an okay unit, but I wish I'd bought one without the "auto inflate" feature. The trouble is, after the cuff is inflated, it takes more than seven seconds for the program chip to detect that it is full and time to start the slow deflation cycle.
Seven seconds with your circulation cut off in your arm is a painful long time. It is longer than you think.
But it is very accurate. There was absolutely no standard deviation from these measurements and the ones my nurse and doctor did right after with their professional units, so quality is very high.

Not only does the HEM-712CLC Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor utilize Omron's patented IntelliSense technology, but it also features an larger cuff that is perfect for larger-sized arms. It's easy to apply the cuff to your arm without any assistance -- simply wrap the cuff around your arm and press start. In seconds your blood pressure and pulse are displayed on the large digital panel. Proven time and time again, Omron's IntelliSense technology ensures accurate, clinically-proven, and comfortable readings.
Instructions for Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitors There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your upper arm, and sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slide your left arm through the cuff and position the cuff approximately 0.5-inches above the elbow. On the cuff you'll notice a green marker; position this marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. Next, secure the cuff with the Velcro material. The cuff should make direct contact with your skin, but you should be able to easily fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm.
Place your arm on a table so that the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. Rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure measurement. Once you feel relaxed, simply press the start button and remain still. The cuff will begin to inflate and numbers will appear on the display as the heart symbol flashes. When the measurement is complete, the cuff will deflate, and your blood pressure and pulse rate will display on the screen. If you need to stop the measurement at any time, simply press the on/off button and the monitor will immediately deflate. And remember, always consult your physician for specific information about your blood pressure.
What is IntelliSense? The IntelliSense monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use -- you never have to make any adjustments to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders because their blood pressure is so likely to fluctuate. The biggest advantage of using the IntelliSense technology is a personalized inflation, every time, for maximum comfort.
The Importance of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons. Home monitoring provides your healthcare professionals with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure. Many types of hypertension can only be detected by monitoring your blood pressure at home, including:
White-Coat Hypertension: blood pressure reading is high in your doctor's office but lower at home
Masked Hypertension: blood pressure reading is low in doctor's office but higher at home
Morning Hypertension: blood pressure reading is higher in the morning
Additionally, many factors can affect your blood pressure, including physical exertion, emotional fluctuations, medications, and stress. So having your blood pressure monitored at a pharmacy with an in-store device after you've been shopping or walking around might not provide you with the most accurate measurement. Monitoring your blood pressure at home allows you achieve a relaxed state more easily, and it gives you the flexibility to take your measurements at various times during the day. By keeping track of your home blood pressure readings, you can provide your healthcare professional with a log of your measurements over time. This can help them evaluate the effectiveness or need for medication.

Omron Bp652 7 Series Blood Pressure Wrist Unit Review

Omron Bp652 7 Series Blood Pressure Wrist Unit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very excited to be able to review this product as I have high blood pressure and have searched for years for an easy to use, accurate monitor. Years ago, the best I could find in the marketplace were upper arm, clunky automatic blood pressure monitors that were difficult to use and produced wild, varying results. The Omron Bp652 is an incredible leap forward for accurate and precise home monitoring of one's blood pressure via a wrist monitor. I of course need to state at the beginning of this review that if you have hypertension, you need to be under a doctor's care and this product does not replace a physician's care, however, it is a wonderful tool for monitoring at home how well your meds are , or are not, keeping your blood pressure under control.
To test the accuracy of this monitor, I took it with me to my doctor's office. My physician measured my bp as 120/81. Minutes later, I used the Omron which gave a measurement of 121/83. That is remarkably close to my physicians bp measurement. Now, I wanted to take a look at how precise the Omron was, i.e. were several measurements taken back to back close? Yes they were! Three back to back measurements by the Omron that night were 116/79, 118/81 and 118/82. Those measurements indicate a high degree of precision. So, in my limited testing that day, the Omron appeared to be exceptionally accurate and precise. I was very impressed.
I think the reason for the Omron's excellent measurements is in large part due to the superb instructions enclosed with the monitor in conjunction with excellent technology built into the monitor itself. Very good drawings and descriptions are given of how and where to correctly position the monitor on the wrist. Then there is the wonderful Heart Sense technology the Omron employs. For best results, the wrist should be at heart level, or in the "Heart Zone". To guide the user to this Zone, the monitor uses a system of orange and blue lights. If the light is orange, you are outside of the Zone and/or are not wearing the monitor correctly and will get an erroneous reading. If the monitor is being worn correctly and the wrist (with monitor) are placed within the Heart Zone, a blue light will come on and the cuff will begin inflating. At the very beginning of using this monitor I had a little bit of trouble finding the right position to wear the cuff on my wrist and I also had problems finding my Heart Zone. But the orange/blue light system led me very quickly to the correct way to wear the monitor and then position my wrist relative to my heart. It was a really interesting experience. When the Omron indicated (by the orange light) that everything was not optimal, I did not receive good readings. But when I got it right and the blue light popped on, the results were stunningly accurate and precise as evidenced by the data I gave earlier. It's really a very easy process, dummy proof (I can be one so I should know!) and very fast.
I really like this bp monitor and would highly recommend it to anyone with blood pressure issues. High blood pressure is an insidious but serious illness capable of killing over time, and it needs to be monitored. The Omron Bp652 is a wonderful home partner for the control of hypertension. And it also needs to be noted that the Omron will pick up an irregular heart beat and report that to the user- very valuable. Even if the pulse is regular, having the pulse rate measured is very convenient as I also suffer from tachycardia (an abnormally fast heart rate) so I can do various activities at home and give my doctor feedback on my heart rate.

Posted for friend: Being a Dialysis patient I must monitor my blood pressure. I have a top rated Blood Pressure Monitor that I use at home but was looking for something to take on the road. Easy use but accurate. When I first used this unit it gave me a very low reading and then a very high reading. I had others try it and it did the same thing. I then sat down and followed instructions to the letter and received a very close reading in comparison to my high end calibrated cuff. I had others sit and use the calibrated cuff and then this wrist monitor. They received almost exact numbers on both 122/80 on cuff and 120/78 on wrist a few min. later. I then used the same testing method of calibrated cuff and a few min. later the wristech following instructions to the letter this time and it worked great. Others who followed the instructions to the letter found the same results. I don't know if the unit must be used 5-10 times as a break in period or what caused the crazy readings in the beginning for everyone but it works fine now. This is the only reason I took the time to write review, give the wristech a chance by testing 20 times and then follow instructions to the letter and compare to calibrated cuff. I think for the money you should be very happy if yours works like mine does now.
I am in no way connected to Amazon or wristech. I only wanted to make sure others understood the break in experience I had and now unit works fine.
Good Luck!

This wrist BP cuff was exactly what I was looking for. Directions were simple and it is easy to use. Holding my wrist, palm side up, anywhere between my abdomen and chest area seems to work fine. The first wrist BP cuff I bought at a store would not work unless held against my chest over my heart, in exactly the right spot, and then it only worked once. My wrist circumference is 8-1/4 inches, so I was concerned about it fitting, but no worries there. My dentist's office uses 3 different ones and told me this one was their favorite, even though it was the less expensive one. The BP readings are right inline with the dentist and physician office. I would recommend this wrist BP cuff to anyone who must take their own BP due to the ease of use, its accuracy, and the inexpensive price. Plus, I would not hesitate to purchase it from Amazon.com.

Got this when my father had a multitude of health issues and required periodic blood pressure monitoring. This device has been great becuase it is reasonably fast but accurate. I tried to calibrate it with the readings from the doctor's office but was also told that those readings tend to be higher (probably from the stress of being at a doctor's office). The main thing was that it reliably measured any changes that might happen. Hint: found that if you use just batteries, it is important to replace periodically since the readings are not as good with weak batteries; another solution is to consistently use the included AC-adapter.

She was told to monitor her blood pressure, but can't use the public style because they are set to test the left arm. Because of prior surgery, her left arm can't be used. So, when looking for the wrist type, this monitor had all the qualities I was looking for. When we received it and showed Mom how to use it, she found it easy to use and easy to read because the screen uses large print. She doesn't have to write anything down. She takes it to her doctor and he can read back through the last 90 days (one reading per day). Because she has an occasional problem with ventricular tachycardia, the monitor also lets her know if the heart is beating irregularly with a simple picture. The cuff beeps when you have it positioned properly for inflation. This isn't a function that is useful for Mom, because she is hard of hearing. But, fortunately, the beep isn't really necessary because positioning is easy for everyone--fingertips on your shoulder. I have recommended this monitor to everyone. I am a dental hygienist and frequently have to monitor blood pressure readings on my patients. I bought one for use at my office. It is quite accurate according to my patients. So I've found nothing negative about this product.

It is critical that when using a blood pressure monitor the cuff is the appropriate size and is properly applied. An ill-fitting cuff or an incorrectly-applied cuff can result in inaccurate readings. Consult your doctor or the included instructions for the proper application of the cuff.

*****
I got this blood pressure monitor for my husband's use--he is a physician with high blood pressure. He was not interested in using it to monitor his own blood pressure, but was very interested in using it in his clinic, as he had the manual type (called a sphygmomanometer) and his nurse was showing signs of carpal tunnel syndrome from manually pumping it up for each patient. So I agreed that he could use it there if he would write a review for me. Although this will not give feedback on the use of this monitor for individual use, I think that the review by a physician will be worthwhile and add something to the many reviews already published here. Here is his review:
"We just started using the Omron BP785, Series 10, blood pressure monitor in our medical clinic. We have tried other automatic blood pressure monitors before and were not satisfied as the readings were erratic at times. We have been impressed with the accuracy and ease of use of the Omron device.
The device is small, light, and has an easy-to-read face that measures 4.75 inches by 6 inches. The back of the device is elevated off the flat surface 3.5 inches, the front is elevated only .75 inches so the device is manufactured to rest on a flat surface and the face is tilted forward towards the user for ease of reading. The readings are in large size numbers also for easy reading.
The Omron, Series 10 has many unique features including an automatic calibration check system with dual sensors that automatically check each reading to insure accuracy. Other features include a cuff wrap guide to make sure the cuff is properly applied. The pre-formed cuff provided makes the cuff easy to apply and fits all size upper arms. In the "True Read Mode" the device takes three separate consecutive readings, one minute apart and displays the average of the three readings following the guidelines of the American Heart Association. The device also has an Irregular Heartbeat Detector that alerts the user of any irregular beats which is very helpful in a busy clinic. This allows my nurse to notify me of any patients with a previously unknown irregular heartbeat so I can refer them to a cardiologist ASAP. The device also has a 200 reading memory storage with date and time-stamp for easy research of the last 200 readings.
We have checked the Omron's accuracy against our standard sphygmomanometer and it appears to be very accurate for all three parameters of Systolic BP, Diastolic BP, and Pulse.
I would recommend this monitor for home use and even for medical office use without any reservations."
He said that he absolutely would give this product five stars. He has only been using it for about a week, so I will update this review after several months of his using it to see about a hundred patients a week. This would be useful in assessing its long term durability.
Highly recommended.

Omron HEM-711 DLX Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor Review

Omron HEM-711 DLX Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor

(More customer reviews)
Two of the previous reviewers noted that their monitors didn't accurately read their blood pressure. I'm wondering if they made the same mistake that I made with my first two readings. My first two readings were 20 points higher than normal!! And then I read the instructions and realized that the air pump had to be on the same side as the palm of your hand. Tried a third time, making sure I had the air pump properly positioned. The next reading was normal. What a relief.
When I was researching which monitor to get, I debated between the Omron HEM-780 and this one. For whatever reason, the HEM-780 sells more on Amazon. The only advantages I could see, however, were that it had a larger cuff, a so-called Comfit cuff, and saves the last 90 readings rather than the last 60. What sold me on this unit, however, was a feature that the HEM-780 doesn't have -- an irregular heart beat indicator (not mentioned in the Amazon.com description but shown in the PDF of the owner's manual at www.omronhealthcare.com). Since the 9"-13" upper arm cuff was fine for me, I bought this unit and it's perfect for my needs. The Omron technology is otherwise the same for both units and the cuff on this unit is also comfortable so no need for the Comfit cuff. If you need a larger cuff (up to 17"), buy the HEM-780. If not, save the $12, get the same technology with the added bonus of the irregular heart beat indicator.

The Importance of Home Blood Pressure MonitoringDoctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons.
This cuff is easy to use, the readings appear to be accurate (they jibe with readings in the doctor's office), and the batteries are lasting longer than I expected. Inflation is somewhat noisy, so you may want to close your office door if you're measuring your BP at work. Cuffs are transferable between OMRON products; the large cuff from my manual bp monitor works just fine on this battery-powered monitor. Also, somewhat to my surprise, the action of manually inflating the cuff does not seem to affect readings; the numbers are similar between both monitors. The cuff automatically inflates to 170 mmHG; if it senses that it needs to go higher, it will continue to inflate to 210 mmHG, and you can force it to go even higher if your systolic pressure is really high. No frills, except for a memory bank that retains 14 readings (blood pressure, pulse). Highly recommended.

As a primary care physician, I've seen a lot of BP monitors that my patients bring to the office to check for accuracy and other features. This one seems to be the best. The easy to apply cuff, auto inflation, its accuracy, the memory, the averaging feature, the AC converter all make it worth the slightly higher price over other Omrons, which I consider the most accurate brand. Since I too have high blood pressure, I decided to buy one myself!

Omron HEM-790IT Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with Advanced Omron Health Management Software Review

Omron HEM-790IT Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with Advanced Omron Health Management Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Outstanding quality, consistency and accuracy! At the end of the day that is all you can ask from a blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer). A few things to bear in mind: In consecutive readings done at the same time, you will see a trend from higher to lower blood pressure as you "learn" to lower your own pressure. Also, your blood pressure at home will be lower than that you obtain at your doctor's office until you learn to overcome the anxiety normally associated with the doctor's office. This is normal and is one of the main reasons to obtain a home blood pressure monitor. Also, your pressure will fluctuate from day to day and even during a blood pressure monitoring session.
Let me give you an example: My heart rate is anywhere from 52 to 58. As the blood pressure cuff deflates your systolic pressure is the first pulse that the unit detects. The cuff pressure deflates 5-10 mm between each heart beat. So, depending on the timing of your pulse, your pressure reading will fluctuate approximately 5-10 mm systolic and diastolic. When your pressure is taken manually the operator can regulate the rate of deflation of the cuff so as to reduce the measurement error. So don't automatically assume that the gauge is not giving accurate readings! Trust me, it is.
This monitor has been extensively tested against measurements obtained at the doctor's office and has been determined to be as accurate a method of determining blood pressure as you would obtain at the doctor's office - actually, more accurate since the anxiety factor is eliminated.
For some reason, when I purchased this item, it was cheaper than the Omron HEM-780, so purchasing it was a no brainer! I saved $5. Is it worth a little more than the HEM-780? It does have a few more bells and whistles including the software. But it is essentially the same unit. If you think you'd use the software which is kind of slick then by all means get this unit rather than the 780. Personally, I would definitely pay MORE, now that I have it and have used it, for this unit. The software if very helpful in keeping your BP records. Otherwise, the units are nearly identical in producing consistent accurate results.
So if you are looking for the best home blood monitor device on the market look no further. Just realize that there are minor variances in the readings attributable to fluctuations in your blood pressure and slight measurement error. I would also recommend the unit with the software - this can come in very handy in tracking your BP and its fluctuations. It also can provide you with a printed record of your readings for your doctor.
I heartily endorse this product.

I used this as a demo for a blood transfusion class I gave. I used it at the beginning of the class to fool them into thinking you could drink whole blood as an alternative to giving it by infussion. Nice prop. Looks very real, including the packaging.

"Calm down, it's not actually blood. It's just an energy drink made to look like blood, and it's served in an IV bag: The fruit punch flavor packs 4 hours of energy along with iron, protein, and electrolytes. Not only does Blood Energy Potion have a similar nutritional makeup to real blood, but it has the same color, look, and consistency of blood. Get real blood nutrients without that real blood taste! The re-sealable transfusion bag style pouch provides the convenient delivery of fluids for vampires and humans alike! Contains no real blood, just synthetic!See?
