you press a button to turn it on, you'll hear 1 beep to signal battery is ok. Then you stick it in the ear, and wiggle it around until you hear two beep which signals that you've positioned it correctly. Once you hear the two beeps, hold it in that position and press the button again to mark the result.
Ignore the other reviewers' comments on inaccuracy.
The key to this and *ALL* ear thermometers is you have to practice getting it placed correctly in the ear channel. At least this model tells you that you've put it in the correct position, with the 2 beeps sequence. Once you've practiced getting it right, I get fairly consistent readings.
The difference between this and a $10 rectal thermometer reading is 0.2*F. The difference can easily be accounted for because you're measuring two different parts of the body.

This model is spec'd to be accurate within +/- 0.5* F, (same as the $10 rectal thermometer, by the way).
Even though I don't know how accurate other brand's are spec'd to be, but I'm pretty sure you can't get much better than this in terms of accuracy. For goodness sacks, temperature readings could be thrown off by 1 or 2*F by the earwax in your ear or whether you had a cold beverage in the past couple of minutes.
Expecting any more is unreasonable in my opinion.

(More customer reviews)I am very glad I got this as there have been many flues around this year. Why I wrote a review: Mine will not read poperly unless I wipe it every single time I use it. This advice is written right on the thing but I thought (for my own crazy reasons) it was being facetious. It works perfectly when you wipe it with a dry cotton swab every single time you use it. I think this is probably the main reason its receiving poor reviews. Hope this review helps so that when one needs it to work it will.

(More customer reviews)As an RN working at two hospitals, I have tried this unit for a week, so far it has been great and the other nurses and aids I have shown it to, most of them are going to buy one. It is so easy and fast to use I feel I am really saving time, as for accuracy it is better than any oral thermometer I have ever used, the real mean average body temp is 98.2 not 98.6 so this one reads closer to the correct temp. I picked up a mild fever with this unit that the hospitals $450.00 thermometer could not pick up due to the client not being able to close his mouth all the way. Every hospital should use these to save time and money. This one works on all ages unlike thermofocus. The only negatives are that for me it is too big to comfortably put in your pocket and feels like the typical Chinese plastic that if dropped may destroy it. Have not dropped it yet so I am not sure how tough it really is.

(More customer reviews)I'm an LPN, 4yrs experience, work in homecare so I travel from house to house, up to 12 patients per day. That's alot of BPs! I wanted to eliminate the "tubes everywhere" feeling I get when I whip out my old school bp cuff, so I thought a bulb with gauge attached would be the best instrument for me.
It is. It's the best for trimming down your equipment and never having the patient hold anything for you:)
But it's cheap. You get what you pay for. The first one I received, had to be sent back due to it not calibrated upon arrival. The second one was calibrated, but boy does it take quite a bit of pumping action in order to take a normal person's bp. Seriously. Patients look scared after a solid 30-40 seconds of me pumping up the cuff... they think I'm going to pump too much and their arm is going to fall off. It takes alot to get it up to 120mmhg.
So, Good Enough...for now:)
