(More customer reviews)This multi-functional hammer looks and feels good. It is heavy, looks and feels sturdy. The weight feels balanced for a good percussion. Easy to use. The handle is chrome plated and has a good grip. The Babinski tip at the end of the handle can be used for Babinski / plantar reflex test and is sharp enough even to elicit pain sensation. The screw-in pointed tip can be used for pinprick cutaneous reflex testing. The retractable brush can be used for cutaneous reflexes, but am not sure how long the brush bristles will stay, as they appear to easily come off. The MDF website says that this model (MDF 515BT - MDF® Babinski Buck(tm) Reflex Hammer) is latex free.

I am comparing this one to Nonnin's portable pulse oximeter which I had for 2 years and this one does not even come close in its accuracy. In many instances, it was off by 10 points! I confirmed this with actual measurement of arterial blood gases.
I was tempted with the price and the battery life but what's the use if you can't trust the reading?
My advice to you. if you want portable pulse oximeter that you can trust get Nonnin.

It's also pink, so it's perfect for any little girl. Along with using it to play doctor and nurse, she runs around the house singing into it like a microphone. It's definately better than the toy versions. It's held-up really well, even with a 5-year-old playing with it daily, and she's pretty rough with her toys.

(More customer reviews)I'm an LPN, 4yrs experience, work in homecare so I travel from house to house, up to 12 patients per day. That's alot of BPs! I wanted to eliminate the "tubes everywhere" feeling I get when I whip out my old school bp cuff, so I thought a bulb with gauge attached would be the best instrument for me.
It is. It's the best for trimming down your equipment and never having the patient hold anything for you:)
But it's cheap. You get what you pay for. The first one I received, had to be sent back due to it not calibrated upon arrival. The second one was calibrated, but boy does it take quite a bit of pumping action in order to take a normal person's bp. Seriously. Patients look scared after a solid 30-40 seconds of me pumping up the cuff... they think I'm going to pump too much and their arm is going to fall off. It takes alot to get it up to 120mmhg.
So, Good Enough...for now:)

(More customer reviews)I looked at a lot of different items in this category, and decided on this one. You pay a LOT for automatic inflation, and that's easy enough to do yourself.
Operation is very simple and gives quick results. Deflation of the cuff is managed by the unit (with a user-controlled quick deflate should you want to quit), and I've never thought is was uncomfortably tight. After a minute or so, you have a BP and pulse measurement. No hassle.
The memory feature is a little hard to understand, and doesn't have a time stamp. That aside, instructions are clear and measurements seem reliable.

Neither of us have had any problem using it. Both have been dropped and banged a few times, and they still work great.
******The price is reasonable. I have no compelling argument against purchasing this product. It does exactly what it should, and seems durable.
Note: This is it, don't look anymore unless you want a better price. Spending more than this on some other product is foolish and pointless. Buy a good steth, don't get caught up on the sphyg.

Omron Sprague Rappaport Stethoscope Review

(More customer reviews)I am a first year nursing student and although I bought a Littman Classic II SE, I was concerned about it growing legs and walking off while in clinical or lab. Based on the famous "For Us Docs" stethescope review from 2008 that you can find online, I picked up this steth for ~$24.00 here on Amazon to use instead.
Pros:
- This stethescope IS surprisingly clear for apical auscultations and taking blood pressures. My Littman may be a bit louder, but I think that it sounds muddy or boomy. This Omron Sprague is clear.
- The steth does NOT have the tunable diaphragm like the Littmann, which I think is a plus. A normal dual-head steth, I find, is easier to use: you
don't have to worry about changing pressure while listening to a patient to hear the high or low noises.
- The blue color that I chose is actually a darker, less toy-like looking color, which is nice. I wouldn't be embarrassed wearing this in a hospital.
- Very flexible in terms of accessories: Adult and Peds diaphragam and bell attachments switch out quickly. There is even an infant bell, and three types of eartips. The accessories all come in a little plastic folding holder, which is cheap but useful.
- Actually feels like its built fairly well.
Cons:
- The double lumen tubing is stiff and doesn't bend easily enough to accomadate various positions during an exam.
- The double lumen has what appears to bea permenant kink due to being folded into the box for sometime.
- The accessories are cheap - the various bells are just cheap plastic (but what do you want for the low price?)
- Here's the BIG one for me: its extremely uncomfortable to wear! The mushroom eartips are worthless, the hardplastic tips did not block out ambient noise well enough, and the clear rubber tips stuck too far into my ear canals. It was literally quite painful!
- The scope will get heavy over the course of a 12 hour shift.
All-in-all, this scope is usable as a last resort. And its cheap enough that if it gets 'borrowed' the owner wouldn't be too angry. Useful for basic auscultations for students, but its too uncomfortable (for me) to be used for any length of time. I will send this back and get a refund, and go with a GRx or ADG, etc. Or get the Littmann engraved with my name.
I would seriously consider getting one that is a bit more expensive for the comfort issue alone. ***Update 3-8-10***
I decided to hang onto this scope and mess with it. I straightened out the tubing by letting it soak in extremely hot water for 20 minutes (not immersing the head), then letting it hang so that the weight of the head would align the tubing. I also put on some soft ear tips from a Prestige Medical Sprague I had laying around and voila! It went from a kinked, uncomfortable scope to one that is actually pretty nice to use. Is it the best scope out there? No, however for the price and clear acoustics, it's not too bad (especially for students!) Just be prepared to give it a little TLC to get it into tip-top shape! I even used a little Armor All I had in the garage to coat the tubing and protect it a bit. Hope this helps!
