(More customer reviews)I purchased this item so I could monitor my 89-year-old father's oxygen saturation levels. He suffers from congestive heart failure and frequently needs supplemental oxygen. The idea was that a finger pulse oximeter would help me to determine when my father needs additional oxygen.
I chose this particular model mostly because it is reasonably priced and supposedly reliable. But apparently I made a mistake. The device works sometimes, but mostly it does not. The first one I received would provide my own (healthy) oxygen levels most of the time but was vexingly fussy whenever I attempted to get readings from my father. You need to have the patient's finger inserted into the device juuuust so or else it doesn't work, and even when the finger appears to be perfectly placed the 5500 still frequntly fails to operate.
After a few weeks the device stopped working altogether. I sent it back to SPO and requested a replacement. SPO obliged me. But whatadaya know, the replacement unit was just as balky and difficult to use as the original.
If one is willing to work for say, ten minutes at getting a single oxygen saturation level reading, this device eventually will get the job done. But basically, it's a fussy, poorly designed piece of equipment that is disappointingly unreliable. In case a reader might simply conclude that this reviewer is some kind of klutz who can't follow instructions, let me add that the hospice nurses that work with my father had the same problems with this device that I experienced.
Don't waste your money.

(More customer reviews)I'm a RRT(respiratory therapist) and I purchased this pulse ox several months ago. I use it daily and have found it to be very accurate. It is lightweight, easy to read in dark or bright rooms, and works well on pts with poor circulation. The only complaints I have is that it is slower and more sensitive to motion than $400 handheld models. I have also noticed the lettering for SPO2 an HR has already started to wear off. I would recommend this product to RTs, PTs, and RNs who want an affordable pulse ox.

(More customer reviews)I did a lot of research between brands before ordering this item. Ultimately the deciding factor for me was the company's website. I found that there is a medical grade of this item requiring a prescription - and it is the same item. The specifications for the two are listed side-by-side - and even the price is the same; the only difference is this one does not require a prescription. The medical grade meters must meet FDA tests - so this one obviously does, as well.
I like the continuous readout. From the pictures I was not quite certain what to expect in the readouts or performance - I didn't feel the descriptive information was precise on this. The readouts are for pulse rate, blood oxygen level, and a scale that, literally, shows your pulse and the strength of your pulse. This enables you to know if you are getting a strong enough pulse to get a good reading.
After first putting the unit on, I did some moving around, sitting still, and various things to change my activity level. The pulse rates changed accordingly and there were some variances in the oxygen level, as would be expected. Though I have just quite smoking (mostly) I did light up and had a few quick drags to see what effect this would have (lower oxygen at first, then catching back up almost to not-smoking level).
I'm impressed with the unit. It will operate economically on AAA batteries. If I end up using it a lot, I'll probably go to rechargeables for it.
While this one was a few dollars more than some of the alternatives, I felt it would be the most reliable from the research I did. After receiving it, I am extremely pleased with the way it works. I would highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)This device is one of the neatest piece of medical equipment I have seen to date. While I have not tested the numeric accuracy, the numbers match the symptoms experienced and it accurately demonstrates the increase when the patient is given oxygen therapy so it is useful for setting the oxygen dose. It has two small drawbacks. First, as advertised, it has no alarm to indicate a low oxygen condition. An adjustable alarm would be a useful addition. The second problem is both a feature and a curse. When you press the power on button the machine comes on with the display arranged for the caretaker to read. If you press the button again, the digits are inverted so the patent can read it. At first this looked like a wonderful idea, the devil is in the fact it is hard to tell which way is up. For this reason it takes twice as long to read because you first have to determine how may times you pressed the button. Note for many people this will not be a problem, but when your blood oxygen runs 85-95 and your pulse is 70-90 there is a problem. If you have this problem just remember the column that indicates pulse is beside the number for the Oxygen while the number with nothing beside it is the pulse.
Overall, the product was shipped quickly and performs as advertised. I am pleased with the purchase. I just wish I could give it 5 instead of 4 stars.
