Without it, my sinuses get plugged and irritated within a few days, setting me up for recurrent infections. It works as an "expectorant" which means it helps keep the mucus thinned so your sinuses can clear more easily and don't become a breeding ground for bacteria and /or viruses.
As a clinic-based, practicing RN, I know that Mucinex / guiafenesin is often recommended by physicians, and is a safe product with very few side effects or drug interactions. (NO, I'm not getting paid by anyone to say any of this!)
Mucinex in this Extended Release formula minimizes the number of daily doses down to once or twice daily depending on your personal needs. This 100 tablet bottle is definitely the cheapest way to purchase - I had been getting it at WalMart for the past few years (until my smart sister told me to check for it on Amazon :-) in the 40 tablet bottles for almost $20 per bottle!

(More customer reviews)This little peak flow meter is very nice. I used it for my son, who had a tendency to try and trick the meters. This meter told me if he was trying to cough into the unit or fool it in some other way. It's small and compact and stores 99 previous readings. I program it to tell me when he is in the yellow or red zone so I can hear it beep when he blows.
The biggest drawback, and the only reason I am not giving a 5 star rating, is the Pikonet software and USB device fails to function properly to download my son's readings. That was one of the reasons I bought this unit, to better track his progress.
PROS:
+ I can get more accurate readings because my son is not able to fool the unit by coughing into it or tonguing it.
+ It stores 99 previous readings.
+ It beeps when the patient is in the yellow or red zone.
+ It is small and compact.
CONS:
- The Pikonet software and USB device do not work to download my son's Piko readings.
SUMMARY
This is an excellent unit as a standalone peak flow meter. Just don't expect the computer connectivity that is advertised.

(More customer reviews)This meter is really nice. It also has optional software and a USB cable available and / or a small printer available from the manufacturer. Amazon's price is competitive.
Without the software the machine takes your peak value from your trials and bases the zone system on this value.
With the software you can set a known peak flow reading (PEF). The meter automatically calculates whether subsequent readings are in the "green", "yellow" or "red" zone. Syncing the device with the software the first time was a bit tricky. You set a patient number for each unit which isstored internally. I eventually got it. Subsequent readings are automatic. Plug it in and it reads and plots both Peak and FEV1 values. The software would be especially convenient for a physician's office as it recognizes each unit and plots tracks the data for multiple devces. Plug a device in, the software recognises the owner and plots the data for them. You assign a patient number to each unit in the software and upload it to the unit. Next time you plug in the unit analysis and plotting is automatic. Easy.
FEV1 is an indicator of obstruction. As I understand it one should be able to expell the vast bulk of the air from one's lungs in one second (FEV1). If one were to know the total amount of air one could expel one would have a measure of vital capacity, VC. The ratio of FEV1 to VC, (FEV1/VC), is a primary indicator of obstruction. Values above 75%, as I understand it, are not so obstructive. Increasingly smaller values indicate increasing obstruction. In short, one can tell lots from this little brief case or purse sized meter.
For about $100 you can get print outs via the optional printer, or if you have your own computer, via the USB link and software. If you have lung trouble that requires monitoring you should get this or a similar device. It works great. If you fall into that category and are modestly computer literate you might well invest in the software too. A manual unit can cost upwards of $20. This is a better value.

(More customer reviews)For the price, this software is very, very basic. I like having it because I can easily see the trends of my PEF and FEV1. It has an option to overlay green, yellow and red zones over the data which I like. I've had my device for about a month now and plan to print reports to take to my doctor. If I had to write all that information down each time I used my meter, I would be much less likely to use it. The software makes it much easier to be compliant with my doctor's orders of getting (and recording) a reading every morning and evening.
In order for the software to work, you must install the driver for the meter. I accidentally skipped this step during installation so it took me a little while to get it up and running on my computer. Also, the meter has to be turned on in order for the computer to download the data. That is a minor detail, but I sometimes forget to do it....then wonder why the meter isn't synching. ;-)

It is lightweight, easy to read in dark or bright rooms, and works well on pts with poor circulation. The only complaints I have is that it is slower and more sensitive to motion than $400 handheld models. I have also noticed the lettering for SPO2 an HR has already started to wear off. I would recommend this product to RTs, PTs, and RNs who want an affordable pulse ox.

(More customer reviews)I did a lot of research between brands before ordering this item. Ultimately the deciding factor for me was the company's website. I found that there is a medical grade of this item requiring a prescription - and it is the same item. The specifications for the two are listed side-by-side - and even the price is the same; the only difference is this one does not require a prescription. The medical grade meters must meet FDA tests - so this one obviously does, as well.
I like the continuous readout. From the pictures I was not quite certain what to expect in the readouts or performance - I didn't feel the descriptive information was precise on this. The readouts are for pulse rate, blood oxygen level, and a scale that, literally, shows your pulse and the strength of your pulse. This enables you to know if you are getting a strong enough pulse to get a good reading.
After first putting the unit on, I did some moving around, sitting still, and various things to change my activity level. The pulse rates changed accordingly and there were some variances in the oxygen level, as would be expected. Though I have just quite smoking (mostly) I did light up and had a few quick drags to see what effect this would have (lower oxygen at first, then catching back up almost to not-smoking level).
I'm impressed with the unit. It will operate economically on AAA batteries. If I end up using it a lot, I'll probably go to rechargeables for it.
While this one was a few dollars more than some of the alternatives, I felt it would be the most reliable from the research I did. After receiving it, I am extremely pleased with the way it works. I would highly recommend it.

She was sent home with oxygen support. They would check blood ox frequently in the hospitals, but Home Health would only come a few times a week. Although there is no brand name on this unit, it works comparably to the ones used in the hospital and by home health. We were able to verify when she needed oxygen and sort out health concerns. It was a great value and we got it within a couple days with expedited shipping.

I've been going to Cardiac Therapy and I found it to be very accurate comparing it to 2 other units costing over $200. I showed it to the instructor at the institute and they liked it enough to order 3 units for the Cardiac Therapy Institute. I also showed it to a member and he also bought one.
The unit came packed very well in a foam filled box along with Batteries, a neck strap, carry case and user manual. I have noticed that you must have your finger firmly placed inside to get a good reading. Other than that you shouldn't have any problems.
I've been using it for a few weeks now and find it to be as accurate as any other unit and for the price... you can't go wrong!
