This sphingomanometer uses the weight of mercury, so you can see directly the amount of pressure it takes in milimeters of mercury to shut off blood pressure to your arm. It represents the "gold standard", a device that is used to calibrate derivitive measuring devices. I don't have to worry that the spring mechanism of my older cuff needs recalibration and is giving me false readings. Now I can be more certain to let my physician know that the numbers I bring to him are valid.
The case is neat and secure. It is very unlikely to cause a mercury spill hazard, so don't worry about mercury and enjoy the validity.
