At first, I was impressed with how well the audio tone followed my level of relaxation.
Then I noticed a glitch when using the GSR2 upside down (the manual said upside down was allowed). The more I relaxed - the tone actually got higher (not lower as expected). I deduced that this was because as my finger knuckles relaxed, it provided more surface contact with the sensors.
As a design engineer, I'm familiar with lie detectors, so I decided to emulate finger tip galvanometers by strapping several rubber bands between my fingers and the GSR2. This test showed that no matter how deeply relaxed I became (I'm trained in deep relaxation techniques), the tone stayed constant in pitch. IE: constant pressure and surface area resulted in a constant tone.
SUMMATION:
There are two influences when measuring GSR. The "small grain" factor is the skin's actual electro-dermal activity. The large grain factor is the physical contact (surface area/ pressure) between the galvanometers and the fingers. Only when the large grain factor is maintained at a constant, can any meaningful data be extrapolated from the small grain variable. It is my belief that not only can't the GSR2 gauge the small grain data, but its tonal pitch relies totally on the large grain factor.
It would be more accurate to state that the GSR2 expresses relaxation level by measuring the degree at which one's finger muscles relax as they're rested on top of the sensors. I could have just as easily held a rolled up magazine in my hand, and monitored how it begins to slip from my grip to determine how relaxed I've become.
The GSR 2 sales rep that refunded my money asked me to write the above, so that he could send it to the device's design team. The team was then supposed to send me a rebuttal. That was 3 months ago. I never heard anything back.

I'm noticing wildly divergent reviews of this product. In my opinion, this is due to two factors: 1) expectations going in and 2) sincerity in one's goal to accomplish what the Wild Divine (WD) is trying to help one accomplish.
I hesitate in calling WD a "game," because that word brings to mind other words, like "score," "plot," "goal," and "winning." WD does NOT meet the definition of a conventional video game. Rather, it is a biofeedback tool designed to aid in the learning of relaxation and meditation.
I see WD as the perfect mix of Eastern teachings and the Western desire for instant gratification - when sitting alone silently in meditation, one cannot see the changes happening in one's body as they are happening; it is only weeks later that a culmination of small changes might be noticed. WD provides that instant feedback so many of us desire to stay motivated in pursuing this important journey; it also provides external proof that the way one breathes can affect the rest of the body. And from there, we can expand into other methods of exploring the journey.
Yes, a lot of the activities seem the same and can be "won" by using the same three breathing exercises (the peaceful breath, high energy, and the heart breath) over and over. I am not an experienced meditator (indeed, I'm just barely beginning), but as I understand it at this point in time, this is because those three breaths or states of energy are the primary building blocks. The "point" is to learn to control your energy, so that YOU - and not your environment or external stress - are the force controlling your energy. (I will never forget one day when I was trying to calm myself and relax, to make the falcon feather float to the bottom of the screen. I'd made it a few inches when my cell phone went off with my sister's ringtone. Opening my eyes to take the call, I saw the feather, pointed straight up, swinging wildly from side to side at the top of the screen. I knew my sister could affect my state of mind, but I didn't expect that! LOL)
The secondary point is to open your heart and mind to compassion, to see all of us as members of what WD calls The Blue Tribe, despite our perceived differences. These kinds of changes do not happen overnight or by practicing a certain breath once - one must practice the breath frequently, and incorporate it into daily life, away from the computer; perhaps it was my imagination, but each "identical" exercise as the program progressed seemed to expect a bit more of me - to hold the peaceful state of mind a bit longer or deepen my heart breath... I bought WD almost a month ago and worked my way through it slowly, often reverting to a previous save when I came back the next day so that I retraced some of my steps, to reinforce what I was learning. I just finished the program last week (working with it almost daily), and yet we are not finished with each other.
I imagine the point of different visuals for what may be seen as essentially the same goal is to prevent boredom - can you imagine what the program would be like if ALL there was to see was birds flying in circles? Also, different visuals speak to different people - some people may go back to those birds day after day, others may rather see the ball levitating. I personally find the visual aspect very helpful; out in the real world, I've been practicing adjusting my breath to cope when I start feeling stressed - more often than not, my mind's eye will conjure one of the visuals from WD (like the bellows from the Lady of the Woods's fireplace) to guide the timing and flow of my breath.
Regarding navigation, I had no troubles. The icon on the bottom left of the screen has stars at its top that point in the directions of all possible movements and activities for the current screen - just move your mouse until one of those stars is indicated on the icon, and click!
If you haven't read the companion guide, do so. WD has a very loose structure, leaving the individual to explore and learn in his/her own way; but if you absolutely must know "what comes next," the companion guide can provide a storyline to follow, as well as a bit of insight into what the creator, Corwin Bell, was imagining as he created WD; his "message," if you will.
To reap the most rewards from the program, WD needs to be experienced slowly, bit by bit, as the mind needs to be allowed time to absorb what it is learning. This is not an instantaneous process, and those who race through the 10 hours of "gameplay" in 10 hours or less are probably not getting all the benefit they could if they took the time to take this seriously.
So if you are looking for a "game" you can play with your thoughts, try "Inner Tube" - a new game designed to work with WD's hardware. I haven't tried it, but it may be more what you're looking for.
But if you are looking for a modern, useful tool to use as a way to begin or deepen your mediation practice - or just want to learn how to relax (at the computer and away from it, in Real Life) - give WD a try.
At the risk of using a cliche, WD is one of those things where you get back what you put into it.
I am eagerly awaiting "The Journey to Wild Divine: Wisdom Quest," to see what it will hold in terms of deepening and building on the skills I'm learning from "The Passage."

The only criticism I have right now for the program (and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars) is that my installation took hours and was fraught with problems; judging from posts I saw on the WD message board, I'm not the only one - apparently, one issue occurred repeatedly with those of us who have DVD-ROM drives. I kept thinking, "I bought this to help learn to relax, and the installation is stressing me out!" ;-) Word to the wise: DEFRAG your hard drive! I was having problems with a few of the videos that make up the program, and when I analyzed my drive, one of them was fragmented into over 400 pieces. Now that they're reassembled, the program runs much smoother.

This thing could look so much better-I find the "stones"/thermotropic liquid crystals on mood rings to be quite lovely-unfortunately the band is usually hideous and toxic. This is not supposed to be a mood ring, but I'm not sure how different it really is. If it had a better design I might have more positive feelings toward it. I don't know if it's accurate or not-I'm often surprised by the reading I get, for instance; I will be in complete agony while the ring tells me I'm having the time of my life.

I am a former Physiology Teaching Fellow, biochemist and current personal growth coach and organizational consultant. In addition, I have a background in psychology and work with biofeedack in my practice. I familiar with many of the products that are out there and this one certainly is not a toy.
This software utilized two primary physiological measurements in novel ways that help you to develop skills that increase your resilience and ability to relax. Practicing as little as two times for 12 minutes a day can make a tremendous difference in your health and well being.
Also, there is a lot of value-added material included with this package. It is being marketed hard, but it really is an economical way to take advantage of biofeedback technology.
FreezeFramer is also an excellent product with a great user interface. The primary difference between the two is that this products also tracks skin conductance which correlates with sympathetic nervous system arousal i.e. your state anxiety. Seeing both of these together has a lot of value and the different ways learning to manipulate your body through different practices is imaginative. The activities for FreezeFramer are less interesting, but it is a very solid program too which focuses on heart rate variablity and does it in-depth including frequency distributions which also correlate with well being.
I don't think you can go wrong with either package. However, you probably don't need both. Read about them and see which one makes the most sense for your needs. If you're primary issue is anxiety, this may be a better way to go. Also, budgetary concerns can be an issue for some. Read my review of FreezeFramer, compare prices and look at the book HeartMath and see what product fits your needs and budget most closely. If you found this review helpful, I would appreciate you letting me know and also providing your comments as I will revise it at different points based on feedback that I receive.
Finally, this is a pretty high price point and if you wanted to you could pick up a skin conductance or skin temperature sensor for a small amount of money used or new from various vendors. This is another way that you can go if you don't want or need the integrated package or value-added content. If you go this route, you can buy FreezeFramer and get the skin conductance functionality separately. However, it's very nice to have it all intergrated together and certainly more convenient.

I can't recommend the Stresseraser highly enough. I bought it because I sometimes have trouble sleeping and have high blood pressure. I have had it six months and use it twice a day: when I wake up and just before I go to sleep. When I insert my finger in the side of the unit my breathing is all over the place. After a few minutes it begins to smooth out and eventually is very regular. For the rest of the day I have more energy and react more calmly to the events of work and home.
I've become very interested in how this works and can't find a lot of information. Certainly, it is very close to yoga and meditation techniques. But I find it easier to use and it helps me focus more quickly. They've kind of turned it into a video game by awarding points for the right type of breathing. It takes me about 8 minutes to earn the 30 points necessary to produce a relaxing result. I try to do about 100 points a day.
Here's another interesting little tip: the stresseraser is great for golf. I use it before every round. It helps my mind stay connected during my swing rather than just kind of blacking out halfway through.
I think this thing is revolutionary and worth every penny you spend on it. But one little note of caution, you still have to sit down, be still and use it. If you're always on the phone, always with one eye on TV or email, it can't do the impossible. But if you give it a chance, maybe it will help you become a more relaxed and effective person.

I give workshops and presentations on biofeedback and I own two of these gauges. They are rugged and seem to be accurate. The precision is measured out to the tenths decimal place. While I think this meter is a bit expensive for what you get, it is a useful tool for monitoring skin temperature on the hands. The relative changes are a good indication of what is happening in the nervous system from moment-to-moment. In a nutshell, hands warming up are good. Hands cooling down usually indicates stress and sympathetic nervous system activation. While this is a very simple device, it is quite useful for those learning to quiet the mind and provides real time feedback to know if what you are doing is working and to what degree (pardon the pun)! They also make combination GSR and temperature meters which are definitely a step up. If you are really serious about stress management biofeedback for in the home then I would also read my reviews of FREEZE FRAMER and HEALING RHYTHMS. They go a lot further and I think they are both well worth the cost.

I bought a stress eraser last year and liked it a lot, so I gave it to my son who was stressed out in law school. Instead of replacing it I decided to give EM Wave a try. I think many people have trouble choosing between these two similar items. Maybe I can help. First, I can tell you that both are useful. You probably won't go wrong with either. However, they are quite different and you may prefer one.
Stress Eraser- strengths
Stress Eraser provides true biofeedback in the form of a continuous graph that you can influence by changing your breathing or even thinking. If you follow their instructions you can learn to control the graph and doing so you learn to relax. The unit is solid. It is scientifically valid and it seems like it due to the accurate feedback.
Stress Eraser- weaknesses
To use the stress eraser you must look at the graph that forms on the unit. I can't see it without my glasses. You must also have your finger in the correct position on the unit. That makes it hard to position the unit so that you can see the graph while lying down. Thus, if you want to use it to help go to sleep it is difficult. Another thing which may be a weakness or a strenght is that it is more or less a one trick pony. No bells and whistles. But it does what it does very well.
EM Wave- strengths
EM wave is more complicated, but not hard to use once you read the instructions. The unit is light weight and has colored lights, which you may like or feel is too much like a toy. I prefer the graph of Stress Eraser if I am using the unit during the day (it is more rapidly responsive and just seems more scientific), but at night trying to go to sleep the EM Wave is better because you don't need to see it very accurately...just follow the blinking lights. Another advantage of EM Wave is that you either put your finger on the unit (like Stress Eraser) or you can attach an ear monitor. The ear unit is great because you don't need to keep your hand on the unit. To use EM Wave thre are three different modes. In the basic mode the unit has a panel of lights that indicates a breathing pattern for you to follow. This pattern is not actual feedback, just a suggested breathing rate (you don't need to spend this much money for that). In the Heart Rate mode (HR)it follows your heart activity similarly to Stress Eraser- so this is actual feedback. In either mode there is another light that changes color depending on whether or not you are in "coherence". Essentially I take it to mean that you are relaxed, though they talk about it in New Age speak, so it is unclear to me what exactly it signifies. In the third mode you only see the "coherence" light, which saves batteries and removes all of the distractions. Actually the unit is even more complicated than this, but those are the essentials.
EM Wave Weaknesses
The unit seems flimsy compared to the Stress Eraser. It is unclear exactly what the "coherence" indictor actually indicates. The coherence coach CD is hardly worth watching. The website and other information is a bit non-scientific with all the talk about "heart breathing". All of that new age stuff will work, but depending on your personality you might find it a bit much.
Final comments
OK so it sounds like I like the Stress Eraser more...but actually I find the EM Wave more useful due to my intended use of falling asleep with it. If you use the HR mode on the EM Wave it is more similar to Stress Eraser..real feedback. If you don't wear glasses or don't expect to use the unit while lying down, Stress Eraser is probably better. EM Wave is more interesting, with colored and blinking lights and multiple modes, but it doesn't have the same degree of biofeedback. Nevertheless, EM Wave does give enough biofeedback and if you use it you will learn to relax. Again, both are good...just different.

I have a long time, twice-a-day meditation practice which includes breathing techniques, but was curious about this device anyway. So, I bought it on impulse. It is impressive, but simple and easy to use. I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't have some sort of regular (2-3 times daily) stress-relief practice in place. It's function is simple - you simply breath in, then exhale when the device prompts you to. The tool sort of "teaches" you how to breath based on feedback on the screen, and as you learn to focus on the breath...poof, you stop worrying about other stuff.
After you learn the "how to" part and get regular with your breathing sessions, the additional personal benefit may be more limited. Since I'm already very familiar with using the breath to center myself, this item could become a glorified "breath counter": The ancillary good stuff is that it records a history of how many sessions of breathing I've done and details about same, and the device will always give me feedback on my current state of mind (am I taking slow, well spaced breaths or short jerky ones, etc.)...I'm just not sure that those functions are quite worth the asking price.
Back to YOU, however. I'd absolutely recommend this device for anyone who doesn't do meditation and/or Pranayama regularly. For those folk who want a scientific approach to stress relief and might feel uncomfortable with the spirtual trappings of Yoga / meditation / etc, this thing is also perfect.
The device itself is very solid feeling, and I'm sure would survive multiple..."drop tests" (although I haven't been clumsy enough to try it yet!). You'll also be able to get started with it very quickly without spending tons of time with the instructions.

BOTTOM LINE: Buy this ONLY if you are willing to put in both the time and the effort required to see results. That translates into roughly an hour a week for at least a month--for the buy/keep decision--and 45 minutes a week indefinitely. Also, keep the receipt in case you find it isn't right for you, for whatever reason.
Other reviewers have accurately pointed out that using this device is, in effect, meditation. That's true. I've used meditation CDs--including one specifically on meditation through breathing. They were helpful. But in my experience, none of them have been as easy and as foolproof to use as this device.
BACKSTORY:
My blood pressure gradually crept up over the years, and the diagnosis of "labile hypertension" changed to simply "hypertension." Saw this device online, and decided to give it a try. It has made the difference between starting medication and not having to take one. TWO YEARS LATER, I've maintained the gains and then some. As a resulted I still don't require meds for hypertension--a diagosis my MD has dropped.
Yes, this IS pricey. But so was the non-generic medication my cardiologist was considering. I have prescription drug coverage, but copayments quickly add up, especially for non-generic. (NOTE: Many of the newer meds are not yet available as generics.) So, I bought the Resperate, knowing I could try it and return it if I didn't like it and/or it didn't have the desired effect.
But overall, I do like it--a lot. And it has had a beneficial effect on my blood pressure. After less than two weeks using this, at my next MD visit I learned that my systolic blood pressure (top number) had dropped 14 points, the diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) had dropped 3 points. Two years later, I now average 110/70.
When the Resperate arrived, I was a little overwhelmed, so I asked a techie person to walk me through the set up. Turns out it was a LOT easier than I'd anticipated.
The basic premise is that blood pressure can be changed by breathing more slowly and deeply. This little machine actually "analyzes" your breathing pattern in the here and now. It first "senses" where you are using feedback from the sensor on an elastic belt, then gives you immediate feedback (initially through the screen, then through the melody) about how to slow your breathing, breath by breath. The default time for a training session is 15 minutes. The goal, however, is to accumulate 45 minutes of EFFECTIVE breath training per WEEK. (Effective is defined as breathing fewer than 10 times per minute.) The manual states that while your breathing will return to a higher rate, the positive mpact on your sympathetic nervous system carries over.
Scheduling the use of the Resperate into my routine as part of bedtime preparation has worked best for me. Initially I used it every night to help establish its use as a habit. Using the Resperate is relaxing; I also find I sleep more deeply on the nights I use it.
I did try the different "melodies"--there are five to choose from. I like three. (One of them I found irritating, another was so-so.)
NOTE FOR TECHIE TYPES: There is a statistics function that can provide detailed info, but if more than one person uses the device, the stats would be meaningless. Two years later, the manufacturer (Intercure) now offers a slightly more expensive version--called RESP@RATE Duo--which incorporates two separate memory functions for each of two users. However, as another reviewer noted, that won't work for clinics or group settings; there, tracking statistical results would stilll need to be done with paper records, or using an Excel worksheet.
A word of caution for those with pets, small children or grandchildren: Don't leave this out, with its tempting cords and elastic belt! The manufacturer suggests stuffing the cords and belt into the device. I found this tiresome, since the cords tended to tangle. However, the headphones do store well on the device itself. A gallon size freezer bag is easier to use. This will keep those tempting cords away from inquisitive pets. Or just put it back into the box or store it in the drawer of your bedside table. (OCD can purchase a travel/carry case from Intercure.)
