(More customer reviews)I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and needed a reliable monitor. I am a health care professional and have used commercial Accu-Cheks and thought the Compact Plus would be a good unit. The set up was easy and the instructions were well written and easy to follow. The unit works well but with a few quirks. After the first drum was empty, I changed it with a new 17 strip Roche unit and turned it on. The unit would not accept the code and insisted all blood checks were control checks. I ended up throwing away a new drum and having to use another. Another feature I didn't like was the amount of blood needed for a test and having to precisely place the strip in the blood drop. I have vision problems and and wasted a lot of blood and strips trying to get a test to work. I used this unit for several weeks and ended up buying a Bayer Ascensia Contour which works much better and is much easier to use plus the strips are much cheaper. I compared results with both units and they have the same degree of accuracy. If you have good vision and like technological things, this would be a good unit. I like simple things that are easy to use and the Compact Plus did not meet my needs.

(More customer reviews)The Accu-Check is the most pain free device I have used and the bonus is that you never see a needle!!!! The lancet device holds a drum of six pre-loaded lancets. Load it by pulling the cap off the lancet device and inserting a new drum, blue ring first, until it clicks into place. Slide the cap back on. Once a new drum is loaded, simply change the lancet with a twist. There are 6 lines on the side of the pen and each time you use a needle, you twist the pen and a new needle is put into place. Each time you twist for a new needle a line disappears on the pen indicating that you have used a needle and shows how many you have left. This is a great product through and through!

She had at least 7 different devices, and apparently insurance covers mine, which she claimed was the best of the monitors she had to provide. This unit is light weight, delivers very fast readings, and uses small test strips, which readily intake the blood sample. It has notes for each sample, before or after meals, and other comments, which help recall what was happening when you sampled your blood. It also has a computer interface to graph the results, which I have just ordered. All in all - great monitor and easy to use.

(More customer reviews)I have tested the Freestyle lite glucometer, and found it very easy to use and totally pain free.
To test glucose level, you can prick yourself anywhere and spare your fingers. I tested and compare the results of finger test and other places, (within 2 minutes between tests) and the difference was about 6 to 12 mg/dl.
the glucometer uses test strips that needs only 0.3uL drop of blood. the strip has two sensors, but you should apply blood to only one of them (either one). the other is used for reference, so the result is compensated for temperature humidity and manufacturing variations.
if you don't put enough blood on the sensor, the device waits (up to 60 seconds) for you to add more blood. be sure to add it to the same sensor! if you put it on the other one (as I once did by mistake), you will get a low, error result.
the included lancing device is safe and easy to use,and you can set it to four lancing depth (according to your skin thickness).
The communications cable, that connects the device to the PC is NOT included in the package and sold separately.
Accuracy:
for successive tests (either same or different test body zones): 6-15mg/dl.
Control solution tests: 3 tests (on two freestyle glucometers): max. difference = 2mg/Dl. ~ 2%
anomalies:
from 70 tests: two abnormal readings that didn't repeat on successive test.
Please make sure to clean the testing site before lancing it! even small contaminates (mostly sugar based...) may affect the results!

(More customer reviews)I upgraded to the the OneTouch UltraSmart meter after being an Ultra user for 1.5 years after getting diabetes. Being my third meter, I have to say-- without a doubt-- that it is the best I've used to date. The PDA functionality is utterly useful, especially for those who have been unable to commit to a paper logbook or who don't want to spend the money on the proprietary interface cable.
The only reason I gave this meter four stars instead of a fifth is because of the case. It is a little firmer than the Ultra case (which I personally like), but for those trying to fit the case in a small jacket pocket it is a tad more difficult. Also (this is the primary reason I didn't add the fifth star) the test strip tube location is horrendous. The way that LifeScan builds the tubes, they have this ridge that juts out which makes it easier to open. For my Ultra case, I could fold the ridge down on the side. For the UltraSmart case, the loop is in a totally different position, which forces the ridge against either the meter or the finger-pricker. There didn't seem to be a "good" position to put the test strip tube in.
Overall, however, I still love the meter itself. It's quick and fast. After hours of flipping through options, the battery life still is running strong. Alsom, the backlight is a dream. It comes in handy in places like dark theaters where light is often absent.
One final contention I have with the meter is one of the options on the meter is "Help." When I was wondering how to change menu settings, I selected it, and a dialog box popped up telling me to access the manual or LifeScan's website. How useful of a help feature is that? Common sense would have said to either include a help system or don't even put the word in at all. Without the "Help" option, the primary text dialog wouldn't even need to scroll. Just a small critique from a UI (user interface) perspective.
Let me reiterate that this is still-- despite the test tube location on the case and the perplexing help feature-- the best meter on the market today.

The Freestyle Lite is just as good with the added benefit that the test srtips do not have to be coded.
This is a great blod glucose monitor for those of use that prefer to do alternate site testing.

(More customer reviews)I received the Walgreens branded version of this meter (it's exactly the same) as my first meter when I was diagnosed last week. Setup is needlessly complex, and the meter will give radically different readings - even on different fingers of the same hand within three minutes of each other.
Last week, I washed, rinsed and dried my hands thoroughly before handling the strips and lance, then rewashed, rinsed and dried my left ring finger and inserted the strip with my right hand (being overly careful not to touch anything with my left hand. I lanced my left ring finger and it read 499. Panicking, I repeated my prep, and tested my right ring finger for a reading of 150. okay, I thought, bad strip. It has to happen, right?
Over the next week, the readings fluctuated radically, so I tested myself using my wife's meter. Rock solid, repeatable results on multiple fingers over multiple times. Thinking maybe my strips were bad, I opened a new pack tonight and properly set up the meter with the new strips, according to the instructions. I properly cleaned and dried my hands and tested my left thumb with a reading of 299, then my right middle finger for a reading of 222. Now my left middle finger for a reading of 153, all in the space of three minutes, max.
I did a Google search on this thing, and several other people have had similar problems. Consumer Reports rated it LAST in their Sept. 08 ratings of 13 blood-glucose self-test kits. I'm throwing this thing away and getting the OneTouch UltraMini, which CR rated highest, for only $2 more than this horrible, cursed thing.
