(More customer reviews)I've used the MF-81 for a few months and I've found it to be very accurate, reliable and, for the most part, easy to use. I haven't been able to test it against a doctor's office mercury cuff (considered the most accurate), but it was tested against another cuff that was tested as accurate and it was pretty much right on the money.
Positives: Accurate, compact, inexpensive (other cuffs with the same features typically cost more), fits both small and large wrists, remembers last 60 readings and gives average.
Negatives: To find out the average of the last 60 readings requires hitting the "memory" button up to 60 times. I lost my instruction booklet so maybe there's a faster way. If not, this is an inconvenience. The battery warning symbol is also rather unreliable. Mine has given a low battery warning for a month and I've used it between 50 and 100 times without a problem.
For the most part this is real bargain. I needed an accurate wrist cuff and I didn't want to spend a lot of money so it's perfect in that sense. If you require getting an average reading without much fuss then you might want to pay more for an easier to use model.

(More customer reviews)I have used this activity meter since last Decemeber and now give it as a routine gift. It works very well. It is able to retain information for at least a couple of weeks without downloading. It is able to take water, mud, heat, and a whole lot of knocking around. It is more accurate than any pedometer I have tried; and I've tried more than a half dozen. One problem is getting the program to load-up on the first try.
The product instructions instruct us to replace the whole unit when the battery goes dead. This includes the necessity of buying a brand new adaptor every time one buys a new activity meter. That's wasteful but I would feel better if we didn't have to buy a new adaptor every time as well. Overall, I strongly endorse the product.

I would recommend that you measure your arm first before buying it to ensure that you are within 13-17'. This cuff should not be used by anyone who has a smaller arm since you will not obtain accurate bp readings.

(More customer reviews)I have never had luck with the cheaper machines, especially the Omron. For whatever reason, they just do not give me consistent or accurate readings-as measured against those in a doctor's office. My arm is normal sized-maybe I am just dense?
Anyway, this is one of the few machines I have found that is consistently in agreement with the machine my doctor uses. As other reviewers have done, I have brought this machine with me and had its readings checked against a known standard, and got the same results.
The machine shipped with multiple cuffs and a nicely-made zippered carrying case in which the machine and cuffs actually fit!
The unit seems well made, and things fit together without it feeling cheap. The unit is bigger than you might expect- more of a table-top size than handheld, and will not fit in your pocket or purse. It also has a small area where notes can be displayed- or the little BP guide that ships with the unit.
I have been using it for about 3 months now, and with no problems. It has a feature whereby it takes three readings, and averages the results. It also appears to discard any outlying readings, so occasionally it takes 4 readings-which I am sure results in a much more accurate reading.
Highlights:
1. It is simple to operate. Put on the cuff- which is well marked for orientation- and press the button.
2. It fits into its carrying case without a lot of gyrations...not always the case with home health equipment
3. The batteries have lasted at least 3 months
4. The display is large, and lights up when the test is complete. Easy to read.
5. It does support 2 users, meaning it keeps their results separate.
6. Ships with a USB cable so you can download results to PC.
7. Also has a memory feature, which will show you averages and historical results for each user.
Lowlights:
1. The PC software is a pain. Rather than a spreadsheet it uses something that looks like XML, and it is clumsy and rather unintuitive. My first effort at printing something to take to my doctor looked quite silly, and it took a little bit of work to get the data into excel.
2. The unit only supports 2 distinct users. Works great for my wife and I, but we leave the unit out on a table, and guests occasionally want to try it...something I encourage. A third user, or a guest mode would have been great.Summary:
Great unit, glad I bought it. Gives accurate, repeatable results with a minimum of fuss. Hate the software.

My annual blood test showed that I was pre-diabetic
with fasting glucose 109 and A1C also slightly above the
desired range. I bought this meter to check myself
further.
This meter showed that I was diabetic, with a
fasting glucose above 130. I went to a doctor after
eating and Dr measured me in the office on their meter
at 122. My Abbott meter showed 154. They suggested
I get the control solution and check the accuracy
of my meter. I did, and according to the check
the meter was accurate.
Abbott meter was showing me diabetic and the annual
blood test and DR meter was showing me just
slightly above desired reading.
I bought another brand of meter. It also showed
similar to the lab test and Dr meter. It consistently
showed me about 20 points lower than the Abbott meter.
I called the Abbott help line and told them that
their meter was consistently showing me 20 points
higher than my annual blood test, my new meter,
and my Doctors meter. The guy argued with me
for about 20 minutes trying to tell me that this
Abbott meter was correct. Among the things he
said was things like:
Your glucose varies constantly, It may read 106
and then one minute later may read 140. I could
not get through to him that this meter consistently
measured me about 20% higher than three other
sources. He just was insistent that the Abbott
meter was correct. Actually if you believed what
he was saying, then you would have to believe
that glucose measurements were actually totally
useless, since they varied at random from second
to second by large numbers. He did not make
any sense whatever. It meant nothing to him
that his meter was consistently 20% above these
other sources doing numerous trials. He just
insisted his meter was accurate.
Finally I told him I was not going to keep using
this meter and buying the Abbott test strips with
it reading this bad. Finally, without admitting
that his meter was off, he said he would do a
one time replacement of the meter, free of
charge.
The new meter arrived from Abbott and it also
checked the same as the original Abbott that
I had. I checked this one also with the
control solution and it too said that it was
accurate.
Now I had 2 Abbott meters showing me quite a
bit high on glucose compared to my other meter
and to my lab blood tests.
To resolve it, my doctor had blood drawn for a
lab blood test, and using this same blood we
checked the 2 Abbott meters and my other brand
meter. The next day the lab results we returned.

The lab showed my glucose at 104.
Abbott number 1 showed it at 125.
Abbott number 2 showed it at 123.
My other meter was almost identical to the
lab test just a couple points or so lower.
The Abbott meters showed an average of 20%
higher than the lab and my other brand of
meter.
It is probably a good idea to check any meter
you get against a lab test, if you suspect it
is not accurate.

(More customer reviews)I received the Walgreens branded version of this meter (it's exactly the same) as my first meter when I was diagnosed last week. Setup is needlessly complex, and the meter will give radically different readings - even on different fingers of the same hand within three minutes of each other.
Last week, I washed, rinsed and dried my hands thoroughly before handling the strips and lance, then rewashed, rinsed and dried my left ring finger and inserted the strip with my right hand (being overly careful not to touch anything with my left hand. I lanced my left ring finger and it read 499. Panicking, I repeated my prep, and tested my right ring finger for a reading of 150. okay, I thought, bad strip. It has to happen, right?
Over the next week, the readings fluctuated radically, so I tested myself using my wife's meter. Rock solid, repeatable results on multiple fingers over multiple times. Thinking maybe my strips were bad, I opened a new pack tonight and properly set up the meter with the new strips, according to the instructions. I properly cleaned and dried my hands and tested my left thumb with a reading of 299, then my right middle finger for a reading of 222. Now my left middle finger for a reading of 153, all in the space of three minutes, max.
I did a Google search on this thing, and several other people have had similar problems. Consumer Reports rated it LAST in their Sept. 08 ratings of 13 blood-glucose self-test kits. I'm throwing this thing away and getting the OneTouch UltraMini, which CR rated highest, for only $2 more than this horrible, cursed thing.

(More customer reviews)PROS: This unit has a sturdy, stable base that sits nicely on a desk or table and doesn't move around while the cuff is put in place. We especially like the feature allowing more than one user to take pressures & maintain histories. The digital display is easy to read and indicates how your blood pressure compares to established health guidelines. The zippered travel case is a handy feature for those on the go. We have taken our monitor to the doctor to compare its readings with the doctor's monitor and they were nearly identical. We were amazed at the accuracy of this home monitor!
CONS: The only thing we had difficulty getting used to was the way the cuff is applied on the arm. It applies in the opposite direction from a monitor we had been using previously, causing us to put the cuff on upside down. Our adjustment issue might have more to do with us switching monitors than it does a flaw with this monitor's design. It just seems that the arm cuff application for this monitor is counter-intuitive.
OVERALL: This monitor is a great value, providing many features for a low price.

(More customer reviews)I had different wrist blood pressure monitors. First one purchased about 3 years ago. After 18 months, it failed. Just quit working. Of course, I did the obvious. Checked batteries, changed batteries, nothing helped. I tied contacting someone. Made overseas and couldn't find out anything. So, I bought another one - same brand. (I figured it was a fluke!). And then, about 16 months later, it too, simply quit working. From one day to the next. Again, I tried everything I could think of. So - I went online with Amazon, found this item, ordered it. Arrived in good time. But - NO batteries included. So I was ready to install the ones I've been using for years - Rechargeable. Then I read the directions, where they state "do not use rechargeable batteries". So I called the company. They stated that rechargeable batteries have a different chemical that can damage the monitor. All of a sudden, it hit me. That's what was wrong with the previous ones. So, I bought new alkaline batteries and installed them. I have been using this monitor for about 3 weeks now. It works fine. I also use the second memory for my lady friend, so we can watch both bp's separately. The monitor also averages them out for us. All these features are great. The display is large, easy to read, and I love it. IMHO, I have no complaints and this is a great monitor. Next doctor's appointment, I will take it with and check it against the regular upper arm pressure check that they use. So, as I said in the title, and have mentioned here, I have no complaints whatsoever. And did I mention? The price is great too.

I calibrated the UA-787EJ against the manual setup (stethiscope, gauge and cuff) that I purchased last week and the readings are consistant. I read the first review that stated their disatisfaction b/c the readings were "high". I would recommend calibrating the unit yourself and if it is off, return it for another or a refund.
For the last week I've tested several monitors in the local stores (Omron, ReliOn, LifeSource) and I felt that all of them reported low BP readings. I even ordered one that was very eratic in its readings but was always 10 to 12 points lower than the readings taken w/a stethiscope (sometimes I used the BP machine at Wal-Mart, which seemed to be consistent). I returned it for a refund.
I work at a hospital, and a co-worker used the new UA-787EJ this morning, found that his blood pressure was very high, went down to ER and indeed it was extremely high. If you have doubts about the accuracy, I suggest purchasing the manual steth., gauge and cuff to do your own calibartion. It was the only way I could be confident the automatic unit was accurate and reliable. The manual setup only costs about $16.00 from Wal-Mart (maybe less from Amazon) and taking your BP is easy.

(More customer reviews)I own several different electronic blood pressure testers, and each of them gives a different value when I test my blood pressure. Some register higher and others lower. It can be confusing and cause problems.
Some time back I rushed off to an emergency hospital thinking my blood pressure had gone through the roof, because my expensive new electronic tester showed my blood pressure kept going up every few minutes.
All that had gone up was my systolic pressure because of the panic and fear caused by the wrong diastolic reading on the machine.
With the old fashioned sphygmomanometer I can always see very quickly where my blood pressure is at. I can soon tell when it has gone excessively high, and I don't have the fear of waiting while the electronic tester pumps and repumps and slowly ticks down to reveal a high blood pressure.
Talk about white coat hypertension? I think these electronic testers cause it more than sitting in a doctors office.
If your bp fluctuates a lot I highly recommend you get this simple tester. It comes with the stethoscope connected making it really easy to test your pressure any time.
It takes a bit of practice to use it, but you need to go slow and not be in a hurry to let the air out too quickly, or you miss the readings. But the great thing is you can very quickly pump up and find the top reading, and very quickly let it out to find the bottom reading, without waiting through the painful beeping of the other electronic monitors until the final reading shows.
Try using it on both arms also to compare readings. And you will soon get to know your body and your regular blood pressure readings. Then you can confirm with the other monitors and see how accurate or inaccurate they are.
